Life of an NBA Dancer: Truths Not Seen on the Court takes an introspective look behind the scenes of a sports organization. As a former dancer and cheerleader for a variety of NBA, WNBA, and AFL sports organizations, Yaa Obeng Whitmore is currently a sports entertainment consultant. She owns and operates Your Own Way Consulting, LLC, www.yowconsulting.com which specializes in teaching the fundamental skills and training performers need to excel in any sports arena.
Through seminars and workshops, I prepare dancers on the best way to handle inaccurate perceptions of them and I teach them how not to be defensive in their responses. Your Own Way Consulting, LLC, provides a series of “How To” workshops and seminars for individuals and groups preparing to enter the world of professional sports performing teams.
All workshops and seminars are geared toward the individual or group needs of the client. The workshops last between 3 – 5 hours depending on the information included. I coach them on the appropriate answers to give fans in a multitude of situations on a daily basis.
In many circumstances, the questions posed to dancers seem to have no ethical boundaries. For instance, some people believe that a dancer’s yearly salary equals the yearly salary of a professional athlete or that dancing is a full-time position and dancers do not have conventional careers. My favorite inaccuracy is the notion that all dancers are groupies and only date professional athletes or celebrities.
