Yaa Obeng Whitmore

Yaa Obeng Whitmore is an expert and authority on sports performing teams. She is a veteran dancer and choreographer with more than twenty-five years of experience and is considered one of the nation’s top performers. Currently, Yaa is a sports entertainment consultant and owner of the premier company Your Own Way Consulting, LLC. Her company specializes in working with professional and semi professional dancers, sports performers, and entertainment teams. Her company website is www.yowconsulting.com.

Yaa began her professional dance career with the Atlanta Eagles of the United States Basketball League in the early ‘90’s. After one season with the Eagles, she took her first leap into the NBA and auditioned for the Atlanta Hawks dance team. She performed with the Atlanta Hawks for five years before deciding to pursue her dancing on a larger stage. Later she moved to the Northeast, where she performed for four sports teams in the metropolitan area. In the NBA, she danced for the New York Knicks as a Knicks City Dancer for a total of three years and the Philadelphia 76ers dance team as a Sixers Dancer for one season. In the WNBA, Yaa was a cheerleader and dancer for the New York Liberty as a part of the Liberty Torch Patrol for two seasons. In the AFL, she danced for the New York City Hawks as a member of the City Hawks dance team for one season.

Throughout her career, Yaa has successfully performed on some of the world’s largest stages that include the Centennial Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia. Outside of the sports arena, Yaa toured Germany and appeared on NBC’s Showtime at the Apollo as a backup dancer with national recording artist. She also appeared as a celebrity guest on MTV’s Road Rules and MTV’s The Brain, as well as dancing in several music videos during the time dancers in videos needed technical dance training just to audition.

As a change in career paths, Yaa finally began working in the executive offices of an NBA franchise. She soon became the Entertainment Groups Manager for Bobcats Sports and Entertainment, LLC. In that role, she was responsible for creating and maintaining several performing teams. Her duties also included selecting, executing, budgeting, and managing the inaugural Bobcats Dance Team, Rally Cats (Interactive Squad), Phat Cats (Overweight Male Dance Team), and the former WNBA Sting Spirit Squad youth dance team. In addition, she managed all auditions and outside booking engagements.

A native of Monrovia, Liberia, with roots in Ghana, West Africa, Yaa Obeng Whitmore currently resides in North Carolina. If you are interested in speaking with Yaa or having her speak to your group or team, please contact her at yaa@nbadancer.com.
